Inflation

In plain words

Prices rising over time, so the same money buys less.

When inflation runs at 5% a year, something that costs 100 today costs about 105 next year. Central banks raise interest rates to cool it down, which is why loans get pricier when inflation is high.

In a sentence

“Groceries cost 8% more than last year. That is inflation.”
