Force majeure

In plain words

A contract clause excusing both sides when something huge and unforeseeable happens.

Floods, wars, and pandemics are events nobody could prevent or plan around. If a contract's force majeure clause covers the event, missing the obligation is not a breach.

In a sentence

“The venue invoked force majeure and refunded everyone after the flood.”
